UTSA to face Incarnate Word, UT Rio Grande Valley this weekend

SAN ANTONIO — Fresh off a 7-0 shutout of Prairie View A&M on Wednesday, the UTSA men's tennis team will play a pair of matches this weekend in the Alamo City.

The Roadrunners (1-1) will make the short trip across town to face Incarnate Word (0-2) at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Clarence Mabry Tennis Center.

UTSA then will return home to host UT Rio Grande Valley (0-3) at 10 a.m. on Sunday at the UTSA Tennis Center. Admission is free.

The Roadrunners picked up their first victory of the season in convincing fashion on Wednesday afternoon in their home opener.

UTSA made quick work of the Panthers in doubles with a 6-1 decision by Fabian Brand and Igor Cantanhede at No. 1 and a 6-2 triumph by Leon Hein and Takeru Watanabe at No. 2.

In singles, UTSA posted four straight-set decisions among its six wins en route to improving to 7-0 all-time against Prairie View A&M.

The Roadrunners are facing Incarnate Word for the sixth time and have won the last two meetings, including a 4-1 victory last season.

The Cardinals dropped their first two dual matches to Baylor (7-0) and Grand Canyon (5-2) last weekend in Waco, and they are scheduled to host Prairie View A&M on Friday.

UTSA and UTRGV will face off for the 41st time in a series the Roadrunners lead 30-10. The Birds saw a six-match win streak against UTRGV snapped in a 4-2 setback last year.

UTRGV is 0-3 after falling to Rice (7-0), Oral Roberts (6-1) and No. 14 Oklahoma State (6-1) last week. It is scheduled to play Prairie View A&M in a neutral-site contest in San Antonio on Saturday.
