Marshall rallies past Roadrunners with second-half comeback on Thursday, 88-81

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA saw its four-game win streak snapped on Thursday with an 88-81 setback to Marshall at the Convocation Center.

Marshall (12-7, 4-4 C-USA) used a 29-point third quarter that kick-started its second-half comeback. The Thundering Herd shot nearly 49 percent and was 8-of-14 from 3-point range in the latter half.

UTSA (9-9, 5-2 C-USA) maintained its lead through most of the third quarter, but a 10-0 run by Marshall in the final 2:22 put the visiting team on top, 66-63. A pair of free throws by Loryn Goodwin halted the run, but the Roadrunners were unable to overcome the Herd.

Goodwin led all scorers with 21 points on 4-of-11 shooting from the field and was a perfect 12-of-12 from the free throw line to put her name down in the record books for best free throw percentage in a game. The junior guard went for her second double-double of the season, as she also grabbed 10 rebounds.

The Roadrunners were able to come within three late in the fourth quarter after Crystal Chidomere drew the foul with a minute left in the game. The junior from Houston made the back end of a pair to make it 84-81 and UTSA had an opportunity to tie the game after Marshall missed on its possession. Carlie Heineman missed from behind the arc and the Thundering Herd headed to the line where Talequia Hamilton secured the win with a pair of free throws.

Heineman finished the night with a career-high 18 points and added five rebounds, three assists and a steal. Also scoring in double figures were Marie Benson with a career best 15 points and Tesha Smith with 14.

UTSA will return to action on Saturday when the Roadrunners host WKU at 2 p.m. The Roadrunners will also participate in National Girls & Women in Sports Day with events beginning at 12:30 p.m. at the Convo.
