UTSA to return home to host UTEP on Saturday

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women's basketball team will return to the friendly confines of the Convocation Center on Saturday when it hosts UTEP at 2 p.m.

The Roadrunners (8-8, 4-1 C-USA) head into the weekend riding their longest win streak of the season with three consecutive wins. UTSA has notched a home win against Louisiana Tech followed by a pair of road wins last week at Florida Atlantic and FIU.

Over the weekend, Crystal Chidomere and Tesha Smith posted stellar performances to help the team to victory.

Chidomere registered a career-best 25 points on 11-of-17 shooting at Florida Atlantic, while Smith posted back-to-back double-doubles and added a career-high five steals against the Owls.

Through five games in Conference USA action, the Roadrunners are tied for third at 71.2 points per game behind a fourth-best 36 percent shooting from 3-point range. UTSA also ranks in the top five in steals (3rd/10.8), turnover margin (3rd/3.4), scoring margin (4th/4.4), rebounding offense (4th/37.6), three-point field goal percentage (4th/.359) and 3-pointers (5th/6.6).

The visiting Miners head to the Alamo City off a split weekend in the Sunshine State.

UTEP went into a triple overtime thriller against FIU on Jan. 12 but suffered an 88-87 heartbreaker, as Kristian Hudson hit a 3-pointer to win the game. The Miners then took on Florida Atlantic and posted one-point victory over the Owls, 51-50.

The Miners are 2-3 in their last five contests and own a 5-12 overall record and 2-3 mark in C-USA. UTEP lost the first meeting of the season at the Don Haskins Center in overtime action against the Roadrunners back on Jan. 1.

UTEP leads the league in rebounding offense grabbing 42.8 caroms a game and sit second in steals per game with 10.7. Leading scorer Sparkle Taylor boasts a C-USA sixth-best 16.4 points per game while redshirt junior Tamara Seda leads the circuit with 10.6 boards per night. Meanwhile, Lulu McKinney owns the fifth-best mark in assists with 4.8 a night.
