Roadrunners to open spring campaign at this weekend's Beach Winter Invitational

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will begin its spring campaign this weekend at the Beach Winter Invitational in Long Beach, Calif. The three-day event is scheduled to get underway on Friday at Rhodes Tennis Center and the Roadrunners will face players from Cal State Northridge, Long Beach State and Utah State in the round-robin tournament.

Led by 11th-year head coach Erin Scott, UTSA is coming off a 2016 season that saw them win 10 matches and Miriam Rosell Canudas earned second-team all-conference laurels as a singles player, which marked the third consecutive year that she picked up postseason accolades as a singles player.

Rosell Canudas became the first Roadrunners to earn a national singles ranking from the ITA when she entered Oracle/ITA Women's National Singles Rankings at No. 51 two weeks ago. The senior from Torello, Spain, is coming off a fall season that saw her post an 11-4 singles record. She picked up victories against three nationally-ranked players — Rutuja Bhosale (Texas A&M), Neda Koprcina (Texas) and Wendy Zheng (Rice). A three-time All-Conference USA performer who earned second-team accolades a year ago, Rosell Canudas was second on the team with 10 singles victories as a junior and all 17 of her decisions came at the top of the lineup. She defeated 119th-ranked Vivienne Kulicke of UTEP, a first-team honoree who was tabbed the circuit's Newcomer of the Year, in straight sets (6-0, 6-1).
