Roadrunners drop heartbreaker to Southern Miss on Thursday night, 69-68

SAN ANTONIO — Southern Miss held off UTSA in the final quarter of play and handed the Roadrunners a 69-68 setback on Thursday night at the Convocation Center.

Four players scored in double figures while Crystal Chidomere collected her first double-double of her career with 12 points and 10 rebounds to go along with six assists and four steals.

Meanwhile, Tesha Smith led all scorers with 19 points and added seven rebounds with three assists, a block and one steal. Loryn Goodwin chipped in with 15 points and Carlie Heineman added 12.

UTSA (5-8, 1-1 C-USA) held its final lead in the third quarter at the 2:54 mark on jump shot by Smith but the Golden Eagles controlled the game the rest of the way.

Despite the loss, the Roadrunners shot 40 percent and were 10-of-15 from the free throw line and 8-of-23 from 3-point range.

Southern Miss (9-5, 1-1 C-USA), who controlled much of the game, kept its poise late in the fourth quarter after the Roadrunners came within one on multiple occasions.

The Roadrunners came back with nine seconds left and tied the game at 68 on a shot underneath the basket by Smith, but on the next possession, the Golden Eagles' Jayla King drew the foul and made one of her two free throws.

UTSA was unable to complete its shot with five seconds remaining as Smith had the final play.

Brittanny Dinkins led Southern Miss with 16 points while three other players reached double digits.

The Roadrunners will complete their home stand this Saturday when they host Louisiana Tech at 2 p.m.
