Benson tabbed Conference USA Freshman of the Week on Monday

IRVING — Marie Benson helped lead UTSA to a pair of wins last week en route to earning this week's Conference USA Freshman of the Week award, the league office announced on Monday.

Benson, one of two freshmen to have started all eight games this season, averaged eight points, 5.5 rebounds and three blocks per game.

In a 71-68 victory over Abilene Christian, the 6-foot-1 forward registered a season-high 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting and a season-best four free throws and she also had a career-best four blocks against the Wildcats.

She then followed that performance two days later with six points and six rebounds against I-35 rival Texas State in a 72-47 victory at the Convocation Center. She also matched a season high with two steals.

The Waco native is just the second UTSA freshman to earn the conference's weekly honor, as Tesha Smith last earned the award during the 2013-14 season.

Up next for the Roadrunners is a road contest at No. 14 Texas on Saturday, Dec. 17, at 5 p.m.
