SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will close a season-opening stretch that will see it play eight of its first 11 games on the road when it travels south for a 2 p.m. matchup on Sunday at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The Roadrunners (3-7) are coming off last Saturday's 88-69 home victory against Southeastern Oklahoma State. Nick Billingsley came off the bench to score a career-high 29 points, while Jeff Beverly neared a double-double with 19 points and eight rebounds. Billingsley hit six 3-pointers in the victory and his 14 treys paces the squad, while Beverly pushed his team-leading scoring average to 15.5 points per game, which ranks 10th in Conference USA.
UTSA will look for its first road win of the campaign against the Islanders (6-2), who are a perfect 4-0 at home. Picked to finish third in the Southland Conference by both the league's coaches and media, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi returned just one starter and six letterwinners from last year's team that went 25-8. The lone returning starter is 6-foot-8 forward Rashawn Thomas, who leads a group of four players that average at least 14 points per contest by nearly averaging a double-double with 16.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per outing. The high-powered Islanders offense is shooting 48.7 percent from the field and ranks 32nd in the nation at 83.3 points per game.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi leads the all-time series by a slim 11-10 margin, but UTSA has won four of the last five meetings and each of the last five contests in Corpus Christi.
Sunday's game can be heard live in the San Antonio area on Ticket 760 AM beginning with the pregame show at 1:30 p.m. Andy Everett will have the call.
