SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will head west and open a three-game road trip at 10 p.m. (CT) on Thursday at Cal Poly.
The Roadrunners (2-4) are coming off a 63-48 win over I-35 rival Texas State last Friday night. Jeff Beverly, who ranks seventh in Conference USA at 16.7 points per game, scored a season-high 22 to lead the way, while Byron Frohnen neared a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds. Beverly scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half, including 14 consecutive for the Roadrunners during a run that put the game out of reach.
UTSA limited the Bobcats to just 30 percent shooting and its 48 points allowed were the fewest since the Roadrunners defeated Cameron on Nov. 27, 2011. The Roadrunners go into Thursday's matchup ranked second in C-USA with a .388 field goal percentage defense and that mark ranks 52nd in the country.
Along with its improved defensive effort, UTSA has continued to rebound as its 43.3 rebounds per outing also rank second in the league and 18th in the nation, while its 14.7 offensive rebounds per game sit 21st in Division I.
Meanwhile, the Mustangs (3-4) will look to remain unbeaten at home and even their record on Thursday. Cal Poly is averaging 70.1 points per contest and features a balanced attack that has four players averaging double figures, led by guard Kyle Toth (11.0 ppg). That balanced attack doomed the Roadrunners a season ago when seven Mustangs scored at least 10 points in an 88-73 win in the only previous meeting between the schools.
Toth is shooting 52 percent from the field and a blistering 53.8 percent from behind the arc. Jaylen Shead also has played a big role in making the Cal Poly offense go with 10.7 points and 6.2 assists per outing.
Thursday's game can be heard live in the San Antonio area on Ticket 760 AM beginning with the pregame show at 9:30 p.m. (CT). Andy Everett will have the call.
