Roadrunners to host annual UTSA Thanksgiving Classic this weekend

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women's basketball team will welcome a trio of teams to the Alamo City this weekend when the Roadrunners host its annual Thanksgiving Classic on Friday and Sunday at the Convocation Center.

The two-day event will begin with a 2 p.m. matchup against Eastern Michigan and Tulane. UTSA (1-3) then will have the nightcap with a 4:15 p.m. tip-off against Northern Colorado.

On Sunday, Northern Colorado and Eastern Michigan will get the action started at noon with UTSA and Tulane facing off at 2:15 p.m.

The Roadrunners head into the weekend off a 77-63 loss to Oregon on the road. UTSA burst out with 24 points in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough to make up the deficit against the Ducks.

Loryn Goodwin scored in double figures for the fourth time this season and is second in Conference USA in scoring average with 22.8 a night. Carlie Heineman is the only other player averaging double figures with 12.8 per game. Meanwhile, on the glass, Tesha Smith leads the charge with seven a game, best for 12th in the league, and adds 70 percent (7-of-10) efficiency from the free throw line.

Northern Colorado and UTSA will meet for the first time in program history this weekend as the Bears head to the Lone Star State with a 3-1 overall record and winners of its last three.

UNC will face its first true road test as the Bears have played all four games, in addition to a pair of tuneup games, in the friendly confines of the Bank of Colorado Arena. The Bears have won their last two games on a combined six points after capturing its first win on a 20-point margin over Denver.

Leading the way for the Bears is redshirt sophomore Savannah Smith. The guard is contributing 18.8 points a night with four rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.3 steals per game. Smith is also 19-of-21 from the charity stripe.

Sunday's match-up against Tulane will be just the fifth meeting in program history with an even 2-2 all-time series.

The Green Wave head into the weekend with a 2-1 mark and a victory over C-USA opponent southern Miss, 86-67. Tulane has played all but one game at home this season.

Junior Kolby Morgan paces the Green Wave offense netting 14.3 points per game and is shooting 41.2 percent (14-of-34) on the floor. She is also 13-of-16 from the free throw line.

Collectively, Tulane is shooting 54.4 percent (80-of-147) while opponents are only shooting 37.3 percent (69-of-185) against the Green Wave.
