TUCSON, Ariz. — Led by Miriam Rosell Canudas' third-place finish in the Singles Red Flight, the UTSA women's tennis team won a total of 18 matches (13 singles/five doubles) at last weekend's Wildcat Invitational.
Rosell Canudas won three singles contests en route to her third-place performance. She opened play on Friday morning with a 6-1, 7-5 victory against New Mexico's Ruth Copas and followed that up with a 6-0, 7-5 trimuph against Arizona's Devin Chypyha later in the afternoon. After dropping a three-set decision (4-6, 6-1, 6-3) to Arizona's Sam Cznariak in Saturday's semifinals, she bounced back with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Northern Arizona's Chiara Tomasetti in the third-place match the following day.
The senior from Torello, Spain, also teamed up with Kylee Kato for a third-place effort in the Doubles Red Flight. The pair downed New Mexico State's Gabrielle Joyce and Rebecca Keijzerwaard by a score of 6-2 in Friday's quarterfinals but fell to the Arizona duo of Camila Westbrooks and Alex Taylor in the semifinals, 7-5. However, they rebounded for a 6-2 victory on Saturday in the third-place contest against UTEP's Milou Pietersz and Lois Wagenvoort.
Denisa Ibrahimovic also picked up a pair of come-from-behind wins en route to a spot in the Singles Blue Flight third-place match. The freshman from Hamburg, Germany, rallied past Northern Arizona's Eirene Granville on Friday morning (2-6, 6-4, 7-6) before downing Arizona's Maggie Cohen (5-7, 7-5, 6-4) in the afternoon.
The Roadrunners will return to the courts this weekend at the SMU Invitational. The three-day tournament is scheduled to begin on Friday in Dallas.
