FIU rallies past UTSA in overtime, 2-1

SAN ANTONIO — Alyssa Robinson scored in the 85th and 94th minutes to lead visiting FIU to a 2-1 overtime victory at UTSA on Sunday afternoon at Park West Athletics Complex.

Senior Alexis Alaniz scored her third goal of the season for the Roadrunners (7-11, 3-6 C-USA) and the home squad nearly made her score in the 39th minute hold up for a win. UTSA outshot the Panthers (3-9-3, 2-4-2 C-USA) 15-9, led by three attempts from junior Kaja Skare.

Playing with the wind in the first half, the Roadrunners held a 10-3 advantage in shots and found the back of the net late in the period. Skare picked up her third assist of the fall when she controlled a loose ball in the box and played it near the right post. Alaniz, who started the match as a forward before moving back to the defense in the second half, raced to the ball and slipped a shot past FIU keeper Sophia Trujillo for a 1-0 lead.

UTSA took its one-goal lead to intermission with the help of an excellent save in the 43rd minute by netminder Hannah Weisse, who finished with three stops, on a 2-on-1 situation for FIU.

Despite playing against the wind in the second half, the Roadrunners controlled much of the action, but could not build on their lead.

As the clock ticked away toward the final minutes, Robinson came up with the equalizer on a shot from about 35 yards out that sailed over the head of Weisse in the 85th minute.

Neither team could score in the final five minutes and the match went to overtime. In the extra session, Lauren Whitaker sent a ball into the box that Robinson headed home in the 94th minute for the game-winner.

UTSA will close out the regular season at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 28 when it hosts Louisiana Tech (13-4-1, 5-3 C-USA).
