WACO — Miriam Rosell Canudas won four singles matches and the senior from Torello, Spain, made a run to the quarterfinals of this weekend's ITA Texas Regional presented by Oracle.
Rosell Canudas, who entered the event with back-to-back third-place performances in her past two outings, opened play on Thursday morning with a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory against North Texas' Maria Kononova followed by a 6-1, 6-2 second-round win against Texas State's Ana Perez.
She then got past Texas A&M's Rutuja Bhosale, the nation's 45th-ranked player and the event's seventh seed, in straight sets (6-2, 6-3) in Friday's third round.
Her success continued into Saturday when she downed Rice's Lindsey Hodge by scores of 6-3, 6-1, which gave her a spot in the quarterfinals. However, second-seeded Blair Shankle from Baylor, the country's 54th-ranked player, ended Rosell Canudas' run with a 6-3, 6-0 triumph.
UTSA will conclude its fall campaign at next weekend's Big Easy Classic in New Orleans, La. The three-day tournament is scheduled to begin on Friday, Oct. 28.
