BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — UTSA and Conference USA-leading WKU appeared headed for overtime, but the Hilltoppers scored twice in the final three minutes to notch a 2-0 win on Thursday night.
The Roadrunners (7-10, 3-5 C-USA) were limited to seven shots against the best defense in C-USA, led by two apiece by senior Alexis Alaniz, sophomore Olivia Nicholls and freshman Jordyn Lacy. Freshman goalkeeper Hannah Weisse went the distance and recorded four saves, all of which came in the second half.
Alaniz put a shot on goal midway through the opening half and Nicholls put a header on goal following a corner kick by sophomore Channing Machen in the 32nd minute, but Hilltoppers (12-5, 7-2 C-USA) keeper Allison Leone made the save on both attempts to keep the match scoreless.
Neither team could get on the board in the first half and the contest remained scoreless in the second half until the home squad broke through with its flurry in the final minutes.
With the match appeared headed for overtime, Sarah Gorham put WKU on top when she collected a loose ball following a corner kick and found the back of the net in the 88th minute. The strike was her first goal of the season and the Hilltoppers put the match away less than a minute later when Iris Dunn collected her fifth goal of the campaign with a breakaway goal.
UTSA will return to Park West Athletics Complex for its final two regular season matches, beginning with a 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 23 contest against FIU (2-9-3, 1-4-2 C-USA).
