Charlotte slips past UTSA in double overtime on Sunday, 3-2

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — UTSA took a 2-1 lead into halftime, but Martha Thomas scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner in double overtime to lift Charlotte to a 3-2 victory on Sunday afternoon at Transamerica Field.

Senior Brianna Livecchi put the Roadrunners (5-7, 1-2 C-USA) ahead with an early goal in the sixth minute. Junior Kaja Skare added to her team-leading points total when she slipped a pass to Livecchi, who dribbled past the 49ers (7-5, 3-1 C-USA) defense and fired a shot into the back of the net. The goal was the third of the season for Livecchi, while Skare notched her second assist of the fall to push her total points to 14 (6 goals/2 assists).

However, Thomas picked up her first goal of the afternoon in the 18th minute to knot the score, 1-1.

UTSA took the lead just before halftime when Melissa Finley set up the first goal of sophomore Sara Gribbon's career. Gribbon redirected a free kick just inside the six-yard box in the 44th minute and the visitors took a 2-1 advantage to intermission.

However, Megan Greene, the leading scorer for Charlotte, came up with the equalizer in the 64th minute when she headed in a feed from Riley Orr.

Neither team could break the tie during regulation or the first overtime period.

The squads looked to be headed for a tie, but Thomas came up with the game-winner with less than three minutes remaining in the second overtime. Again it was Orr who set up the strike, which handed the Roadrunners their first double-overtime defeat since late in the 2015 season.

UTSA will return home for a pair of matches next weekend, beginning with a 7 p.m. matchup on Friday, Oct. 7, against Rice (5-4-1, 2-2 C-USA) at Park West Athletics Complex.
