UTSA outlasts UTEP in five sets on Sunday

SAN ANTONIO — Outside hitter Dajana Boskovic powered the UTSA offense Sunday afternoon to a 3-2 (23-25, 25-21, 25-23, 22-25, 15-7) victory over UTEP at the Convocation Center.

In the second meeting of the season with UTEP, the contest went the distance with UTSA (14-4, 5-1 C-USA) prevailing. The Roadrunners hit a .122 for the match while holding the Miners to a .098 attack percentage.

Boskovic recorded 24 of the team's 57 total kills and added nine digs and a pair of blocks to her performance. Kara Teal added nine kills for a .421 hitting percentage while Antonela Jularic also added nine winners with career bests in digs (17) and blocks (5).

As a team, the Roadrunners also recorded a season-high 11.5 blocks with six Roadrunners collecting multiple blocks.

The Roadrunners' slow start was capped off with a 25-23 loss in the opening set. Fifteen ties and five lead changes occurred in the set with the final tie coming at 23-all on a miscue by UTSA.

UTSA recovered in the second set with 25-21 win and took a 2-1 lead in the match as the Roadrunners recorded a 25-23 win in the third set. The Roadrunners started off strong in the third set that held the rest of the way.

In the fourth set, the score bounced back-and-forth and after a tie at 15-all on a block by UTEP (4-16, 2-5 C-USA), the Miners gained control of the set to notch a 25-22 win.

The Roadrunners made quick work of the Miners in the deciding set as they jumped to an 8-2 lead before UTEP would score again. The Miners wouldn't go down without a fight as they scored four in a row to spoil the Roadrunners quick victory. UTSA called for a timeout and, much expected, a kill by Boskovic sealed the win for the Roadrunners.

Macey Austin led the Miners with 15 kills and Sarah Villa added 25 digs.

UTSA will continue its three-match home stand as the Roadrunners host Rice on Friday, Oct. 21, at 6 p.m.
