Roadrunners down UAB on Sunday afternoon, 2-1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Senior Brianna Livecchi scored her team-leading fourth goal during Conference USA action to help lift UTSA to a 2-1 win at UAB on Sunday afternoon at BBVA Compass Field.

The strike was the fifth of the season overall for the San Antonio native, who continues to add on to a career year, while freshman Camrynne Hoover added her second goal of the campaign in the second half. The offense, along with a combined four saves from freshman goalie Hannah Weisse and sophomore keeper Isabella Sanchez, gave the Roadrunners (7-9, 3-4 C-USA) their most wins since the 2011 team went 9-9-2.

UTSA jumped ahead in the first half when freshman Jordyn Lacy corralled a loose ball in the penalty box after a corner kick and set up Livecchi in the 20th minute for a 1-0 lead. The helper was her team-high fifth of the season to go along with five goals.

The UTSA defense allowed just two shots on goal in the first half that Weisse converted to saves and the visitors took the slim advantage to halftime.

Much like the opening half, it took the Roadrunners about 20 minutes to score in the second half. In the 65th minute it was sophomore Melissa Finley who picked up a loose ball in the box and assisted Hoover's goal, which proved to be the game-winner, to double the cushion.

The score remained 2-0 in UTSA's favor, but the Blazers (4-10-1, 1-6-1 C-USA) made a late push and sliced the lead in half on Megan Hudgens' goal in the 83rd minute.

However, that would be as close as the home squad would get. UAB registered two shots in the final five minutes, but could not find the back of the net as UTSA closed out the 2-1 final.

The Roadrunners will close out their three-match road swing at 7 p.m. next Thursday, Oct. 20, when they travel to Bowling Green, Ky., to take on league-leading WKU (11-5, 6-2 C-USA).
