SAN ANTONIO — UTSA freshman Igor Cantanhede won the singles Flight 4 title to highlight action for the Roadrunners at the inaugural UTSA Cup held over the weekend at the UTSA Tennis Center.
Cantanhede posted a perfect 4-0 record during the three-day tournament en route to claiming top honors in his flight.
The freshman opened action with a 6-1, 6-0 sweep of Incarnate Word's Zachary Vander Heidan on Friday. He turned in two more victories on Saturday with a 6-0, 6-2 decision against Austin Robles of Arkansas and a 6-7, 6-3, 10-4 triumph against freshman teammate Luis Tirado. Cantanhede closed out his singles competition with a 6-2, 6-3 win against Jason Roberts of Laredo Community College on Sunday to clinch Flight 4.
Cantanhede also paired up with Sebastian Santibanez of Lamar for a 3-1 record in Flight 1 doubles action. The duo beat UTSA's tandem of Axel Cronje and Takeru Watanabe, 6-2, in the opening match and also registered a 6-2 win against Johan den Toom and Robles of Arkansas and a 6-3 victory over Gabriel Borunda of UTSA and John King (unattached).
Cronje went 2-2 in singles action. The freshman from Denmark downed Jacob Herndon of Arkansas, 6-2, 7-5, in the first match and also posted a 6-2, 6-0 sweep of Brock Lauer of Lamar.
Tirado teamed up with Watanabe for a 6-4 doubles win against Ivanhoe Lissanevitch and Vander Heidan of UIW, and the Bolivia native also turned in a 6-4, 6-2 win against Vander Heidan.
Christian Carrillo and Tirado posted a 6-2 doubles win against Lukas Grubelnig and Lauer of Lamar on Friday, while the junior from Frisco also beat Grubelnig, 2-6, 7-6, 10-7 in singles action on Saturday.
Other victories for the Roadrunners included, Borunda with a 0-6, 6-4, 6-4 rally against Santibanez of Lamar and Borunda and King with a 7-5 doubles decision against Biyik Akinshemoyin and CArlos Pedrosa of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Nikita Lis of Lamar claimed Flight 1 singles honors, while Mauricio Del Rio of UT Arlington won flight 2 and Powell of Lamar captured Flight 3.
In doubles, Lis and Jeandre Hoogenboezem of Lamar won Flight 1 and Herndon and Juan Marino of Arkansas took Flight 2.
The Roadrunners will continue their fall season on Oct. 21-24 at the ITA Texas Regional Championship in Fort Worth.
