EL PASO — UTEP scored a pair of goals in the second half to rally from a 2-1 deficit and score a 3-2 victory over visiting UTSA on Friday night at University Field.
Freshman Marianne Hernandez had a hand in both scores for the Roadrunners (6-9, 2-4 C-USA) with a goal in the first half and a perfect corner kick to set up fellow freshman Katieann Lochte's goal. Sophomore Michelle Cole made a pair of saves, while UTSA outshot the Miners (10-4-2, 3-3 C-USA) 15-14.
The home squad got on the board first with a quick strike in the sixth minute by Kennadie Chaundhary. But Hernandez evened the score in the 37th minute on a free kick. The Pflugerville native rifled a shot over the defensive wall to the upper right corner of the goal and the teams headed to intermission tied, 1-1.
UTSA struck quickly out of the intermission when freshman Katieann Lochte notched her fourth goal of the season when she blasted a Hernandez corner kick to the back of the net in the 49th minute. The score gave the Roadrunners a 2-1 advantage.
However, the Miners would score twice in a 14-minute span to take the lead for good.
Bri Barreiro found the back of the net in the 61st minute and Bri Thomas added a goal in the 74th minute to grab a 3-2 advantage.
UTSA was limited to just two shots over the final 16 minutes and could not come up with the equalizer before the final buzzer.
The Roadrunners will look to bounce back in a 1 p.m. matchup at UAB (4-9-1, 1-5-1 C-USA) on Sunday, Oct. 16 in Birmingham, Ala.
