Abundis leads UTSA at Saturday's Bronco Invitational

SUNNYVALE, Calif. — Yulisa Abundis paced UTSA's women's cross country team at Saturday's Bronco Invitational.

Abundis, who hails from nearby Aptos, Calif., circled the Baylands Regional Park 6,000-meter trail in 21:59.0, which was good for 66th in the field of 170 runners, and the remainder of the Roadrunners' scoring contigent consisted of Grace Kohler (87th/22:19.7), Gabby Gonzales (121st/22:57.5), Emily Voss (126th/23:07.7) and Sarah Estrada (142nd/23:30.7).

"Today's race was great," Abundis said. "It was competitive and I thought we ran strong as a team while giving it our full energy. It's always beautiful to be back home in California and it was a great day to be a Roadrunner."

Southern Utah won the team title with 60 points and Danielle Shanahan, who ran unattached, captured the individual crown in 19:42.0. UC Santa Barbara (138) and Loyola Marymount (148) rounded out the top three squads. UTSA placed 17th in the field of 19 Division I teams with their 456 points.

"I was proud of how the team competed this morning," Cross Country Coach David Hartman said. "It was a competitive field and I thought we handled it well. We are rounding into shape at the right time and will run our best at the Conference USA meet in two weeks."

The Roadrunners will take next weekend off before competing at the Conference USA Championships, which is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 29, in Concord, N.C.
