UTSA to continue fall campaign this weekend at Rice Invitational

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA men's tennis team will continue its fall campaign this weekend at the Rice Invitational in Houston.

The three-day tournament is set to get underway at 9 a.m. on Friday and continue through Sunday at the George R. Brown Tennis Center. The Roadrunners will compete in singles and doubles brackets against players from Army, Incarnate Word, Prairie View A&M, Rice, Troy, Tulane and UT Arlington.

UTSA is coming off a solid showing at the season-opening Islander Open on Sept. 16-18 in Corpus Christi.

In singles, Christian Carrillo advanced to the quarterfinal round among a pair of victories for the junior from Frisco. Takeru Watanabe posted three victories in the backdraw, including a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Lamar's Lukas Grubelnig. The duo also teamed up for a 7-5 doubles backdraw triumph against Grubelnig and Brock Lauer of Lamar.

Meanwhile, newcomers Gabriel Borunda (three) and Igor Cantanhede (two) combined for five wins in backdraw singles action in their UTSA debuts. The pair also posted a 6-4 doubles win against Grubelnig and Lauer in the backdraw.
