COLLEGE STATION — Monty Bertschy paced the UTSA men's cross country team for the second time this season at Saturday's Texas A&M Invitational.
Bertschy, a junior from Boerne, covered the 8,000-meter Dale Watts Cross Country Course in 25:35.2 en route to finishing 40th in the field of 145 runners.
Meanwhile, Hunter Hawkins (64th/26:12.6), Saul Vasquez (81st/26:38.3), Peter Sepulveda (82nd/26:39) and John von Dohlen (89th/26:48.6) rounded out the team's scoring contingent.
Houston's Brian Barraza, who ran an an unattached entry, won the individual crown in 23:53 and Kentucky's Jacob Thomson finished as the top collegian in second place (24:12.7).
Meet host Texas A&M captured the team title with 33 points, while Kentucky (41) and Lamar (81) rounded out the top three. The Roadrunners placed 11th in the 15-team field with their 277 points.
UTSA will return to action in three weeks when it travels to the West Coast for the Bronco Invitational. The meet is scheduled for 11 a.m. (CT) in Sunnyvale, Calif.
