AUSTIN — UTSA went the distance against Miami on the second day of the American Campus Classic and suffered a 3-2 (13-25, 22-25, 25-20, 26-24, 15-12) loss Friday morning at Gregory Gymnasium.
It was the first five-setter for the Roadrunners this season as the loss dropped UTSA to 3-2 on the season, while Miami improveed to 3-1 overall.
Three Roadrunners registered double figures with Dajana Boskovic leading the way with her second double-double of 21 kills and 10 digs with four blocks. Meanwhile, Marijeta Runjic tallied 12 kills and Antonela Jularic 10 winners with seven digs and three blocks.
UTSA led the match early taking the first two sets by scores of 25-13 and 25-22. The Roadrunners dominated the opening set as they held Miami to a -.067 hitting percentage.
Momentum shifted in the third set after the Roadrunners were held to a .160 attack percentage and tallied only eight kills and four blocks. After the final tie at three, UTSA stayed close and even came within one at the 7-6 mark on a miscue by the Canes. Miami then followed with a 9-1 run and never looked back.
The Roadrunners attempted to secure the match in four sets but were unable to do so after a pair of miscues led to Miami's win. Late in the stanza, the Canes held a 23-20 lead but back-to-back kills from Jularic brought UTSA within one, 23-22.
On the following serve, UTSA hit into the net to give Miami set point but another two kills from the Roadrunners kept UTSA alive and tied the score at 24. Back-to-back errors ended the Roadrunners hope in winning in four.
In the deciding set, UTSA stumbled after a 9-4 lead over Miami. The Canes rolled to a 7-0 run to lead the Roadrunners 10-9 but pulled through after a replay gave UTSA to the point on a kill from Boskovic. Back-to-back kills from Kolby Bird secured the win for Miami.
UTSA will close out tournament play at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday against Army.
