Houston slips past UTSA on Sunday night, 2-0

HOUSTON — UTSA out-shot Houston, 17-4, but the Cougars scored a pair of goals early in the second half to earn a 2-0 victory on Sunday night at Carl Lewis Complex.

Jordyn Lacy led the Roadrunners (4-5), who closed out non-conference action, with a team-high four shots, including three shots on-goal. Isabella Sanchez recorded a save and played 76 minutes in goal.

Meanwhile, Cougars (4-1-1) goalies combined to record 11 saves, led by nine stops from Nicole Young.

In the opening half, UTSA out-shot Houston 8-1, but could not find the back of the net. The visitors controlled the action for much of the period and the Roadrunners defense held the Cougars without a shot for the final 41 minutes of the period.

UTSA nearly took the lead in the 39th minute, when sophomore Olivia Nicholls rifled a shot that hit off the crossbar. With the near miss, the teams went to halftime scoreless.

Houston broke through in the 51st minute as Vanessa Almaguer found the back of the net on the team's second shot of the night. Margo McEntire set up the goal and less than a minute later, Desiree Bowen chipped in her second goal of the season that pushed the advantage to 2-0.

The Cougars managed just one shot for the rest of the night, while UTSA kept the pressure on with nine shots over the final 35 minutes. However, Houston held off the visitors and notched its fourth shutout of the fall.

UTSA will open Conference USA action at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24, when it hosts Middle Tennessee (3-4-1, 1-0 C-USA) at Park West Athletics Complex.
