CORPUS CHRISTI — Christian Carrillo advanced to the quarterfinal round of the singles draw to highlight action for the UTSA men's tennis team at the Islander Open this weekend at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
Carrillo drew a first-round bye and then dispatched Elliot Johnstone of UTRGV by a 6-3, 6-3 count in the round of 16. The junior from Dallas later was ousted by Sebastian Santibanez of Lamar, 7-5, 6-3.
Carrillo also teamed up with Takeru Watanabe in doubles and the tandem dropped a narrow 6-4 decision to the eventual champion duo of Mitchell Cook and Paul Cook from host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
In singles consolation bracket action, Watanabe scored a 6-2, 6-1 sweep of Brock Lauer of Lamar, Gabriel Borunda posted a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Chad Nguyen of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Igor Cantanhede downed Mitchell Cook, 6-3, 6-1.
Watanabe went on to post three more singles consolation triumphs, a 6-4, 6-2 win against Henrik Munch of Rice, a 7-5, 4-6, 10-5 decision against Yehotanan Kaufman of UTRGV and a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Lukas Grubelnig of Lamar.
Borunda scored a 6-3, 2-6, 12-10 win against Grubelnig and a 6-2, retired decision against Lamar's Logan Powell.
Cantanhede finished off his singles action with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Daniel Kellerbenz of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The Roadrunners will return to action on Sept. 30-Oct. 2 when they travel to Houston for the Rice Invitational.
