AUSTIN — Mason Riley raced to a 21st-place finish and the freshman from San Antonio led the UTSA men's cross country team at Friday night's Texas Invitational.
Riley circled the Hancock Golf Course 5,000-meter loop in 17:22.99 in the first race of his collegiate career.
"I felt pretty good considering it was my first collegiate outing," Riley said. "This is a great sign that I can only improve as the season progresses."
Marcus Guajardo (25th/17:51.10), Skye Knight (30th/18:13.35), Thor Crux (33rd/18:33.09) and Dario Johnson (34th/18:55.87) rounded out the Roadrunners' scoring contingent.
Meet host Texas won the team title with a perfect score of 15 points on the strength of Alex Rogers' individual championship in 15:05.55. Texas-Rio Grande Valley was second with 50 points, while Prairie View A&M (82), Texas Southern (108) and UTSA (126) rounded out the top five.
The Roadrunners will return to action next Saturday, Sept. 24, at the Texas A&M Invitational in College Station.
