Come And Take It: A New Tradition

SAN ANTONIO — With a new era starting this season under head coach Frank Wilson comes a new tradition.

Numerous college athletic programs across the country have a fourth quarter tradition. There are many different forms that range from music to fan and team interactions.

Fans already are familiar with UTSA's version of the famous Come and Take It flag. It has been carried onto the field by Rowdy while leading the team out of the tunnel prior to home games.

Starting this season during the break between the end of the third quarter and start of the fourth quarter at each home game, music and a video will play that will prompt fans to engage in a new tradition by holding up their Come and Take It flags in support of the team. The idea is that heading into the fourth quarter, regardless of the score, the fans and the team are not backing down and we are going to give it our all. As Coach Wilson has said, "All Hands on Deck!"

With the new tradition comes a new orange Come and Take It flag. The flag features the star, Rowdy bird head logo and the words "Come and Take It."

Starting this year, all season ticket holders will receive an annual gift from UTSA Athletics. This year, season ticket holders will receive one exclusive Come and Take It flag per account to begin the tradition.  The exclusive version will also notate "UTSA Season Ticket Holder" in the upper-left hand corner of the flag.  Those flags will be available for pick-up at the first home game and more information and instructions will be sent to the ticket holders prior to the Sept. 3 home opener.

"Traditions at athletics events are essential to the fan experience," UTSA Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics Lynn Hickey said. "The Come and Take It flag has already been adopted by our fans and this new tradition will help elevate our home field advantage entering the fourth quarter. It's a show of support by our fans that we're not backing down. We're very excited to see this take off."

All fans are encouraged to bring their own Come and Take It flag into the games to show support and create a home field advantage heading into the fourth quarter. The student section will be involved in the tradition as well and that will be a surprise for all fans at the first game.  Fans may purchase flags from the UTSA Bookstore and at merchandise tables located on the Alamodome concourse during home games. Flagpoles will not be allowed inside the facility.

Whether you have the new orange or the traditional white Come and Take It flag, we hope you will join Roadrunners Nation in this new tradition.
