SAN ANTONIO — With half of the summer season already in the books, four Roadrunners were selected to start in their respective summer baseball leagues. Eleven overall players are polishing up their skills this summer playing all across the country from Virginia, Massachusetts, Kansas, New York and Texas.
Valley Baseball League
Mason George, Harrisonburg Turks
George leads three Roadrunners on the Harrisonburg Turks team that leads the South Division in the Valley Baseball League. The senior catcher is batting a .316 clip through 27 games this summer and ties for fourth with 31 hits and 18 RBIs. George has crossed home plate 12 times and is second with five stolen bases. George was named to the league's All-Star Game this past weekend.
Jason Serchay, Harrisonburg Turks
A regular in the Roadrunners' DH spot, Jason Serchay is seeing time in the outfield and is batting .314 on the season. He ties for second on the team with 33 hits and has scored a team third-best 22 runs with 18 RBIs. Serchay has also walked 10 times and was named to the Valley Baseball League All-Star Game roster.
Bryan Arias, Harrisonburg Turks
Bryan Arias had the hot bat early in the summer season and is now batting a .316 clip in 28 games played. He ties for fourth with 31 hits and 21 runs scored. He's tallied 10 RBIs and leads the team with 20 walks and six stolen bases.
New England Collegiate Baseball League
Jesse Baker, Plymouth Pilgrims
After a season away from college baseball, Jesse Baker makes his return to brush off some of the dust with the Plymouth Pilgrims. The former All-American is batting .216 halfway through the season and leads the team in RBIs (11), home runs (3) and stolen bases (3). He's also recorded 19 hits with eight runs and eight walks.
Jayhawk Baseball League
Derek Craft, Liberal BeeJays
Right-hander Derek Craft has made seven appearances, including one start, for the Liberal BeeJays and sits at a 2.91 ERA in 12.1 innings of action. Craft has allowed four runs, all earned, and nine walks and eight strikeouts. The Hawkins native earned the save once this summer helping the BeeJays to a 6-3 victory in his one inning of work.
Jake Harrison, Liberal BeeJays
The sophomore right-hander has logged the fourth most innings on the pitching staff and has a 2.55 ERA in 24.2 innings on the mound. He's made five appearances, which include four starts, and holds a 2-0 record. He's struck out 12 batters and has allowed nine walks. Harrison has also given up eight runs, seven of which are earned.
Texas Collegiate Baseball League
Steven Dressler, Brazos Bombers
Dressler, another Roadrunner that had to sit out the 2016 season, brushes up on his live pitching as he's tossed the fourth most innings on the pitching staff and holds a 1.40 ERA in 25.2 innings of action. Dressler has made six appearances on the mound, including four starts, and has struck out the third most with 32 strikeouts. He's 3-1 on the season and has given up six runs, four earned.
Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League
Ben Brookover, Jamestown Jammers
One of four Roadrunners playing for the Jamestown Jammers, Ben Brookover heads into the league's All-Star game batting .302 with a team-leading 39 hits, 14 doubles, three home runs and 36 RBIs. He's also recorded 25 runs, nine walks and four stolen bases. Brookover has also seen some time on the mound, making six appearances, but has yet to receive a decision. The right-hander has pitched a total of 6.1 innings and struck out nine and walked five. Brookover was selected to the PGCBL All-Star Game, which is set for Wednesday, July 20.
Skyler Valentine, Jamestown Jammers
Of the four Roadrunners on the roster, junior Skyler Valentine leads the quartet with a .314 batting average and has seen time on the field in all but two games this summer. As a selection to the PGCBL All-Star Game, Valentine leads the team in runs scored (30) and is second in hits (38), stolen bases (13) and walks (25).
C.J. Pickering, Jamestown Jammers
Infielder C.J. Pickering sits at a .248 batting average midway through the summer season. The Houston native is fourth on the team with 31 hits and has turned the most double plays with seven. He's scored 20 runs and has hit nine doubles with 15 RBIs and eight stolen bases. Pickering has also made one appearance on the mound and faced five batters, in which he allowed just one walk and struck out two.
Bradley Griggs, Jamestown Jammers
A regular starter for the Jamestown Jammers, Griggs has made six appearances, all starts, and has logged a staff-best 33.1 innings. The southpaw has a 4.86 ERA with a 3-3 record. Griggs also leads the staff with 38 strikeouts and has allowed 16 walks. In his last appearance, Griggs went seven innings and did not allow a hit or run and fanned six to lead the team to a 3-0 win.
