SAN ANTONIO — Randee Crawford slugged her team-leading 13th home run, but No. 22 Florida Atlantic swept a doubleheader at UTSA on Saturday afternoon by scores of 7-1 and 3-2 at Roadrunner Field.
Despite the setbacks, the Roadrunners (20-31, 11-12 C-USA) secured a spot in next week's Conference USA Tournament. Crawford and Jade Smith each recorded a pair of hits during the twinbill, while Lizzy Fox surrendered just three earned runs in 10.1 innings.
In the opener, the Owls (46-7, 21-2 C-USA) scored three runs in the top of the first with the help of three UTSA errors and rode a strong start from pitcher Kylee Hanson to a 7-1 victory.
The lead grew to 7-0 as Florida Atlantic added three runs in the fourth and another in the fifth.
Smith gave the Roadrunners their first hit with a single in the bottom of the fifth, but the Owls took the seven-run lead into the bottom of the seventh.
Crawford broke up the shutout in the bottom of the panel with a solo homer the opposite way. The blast was her 13th of the spring, eight of which have come during C-USA action, and it was just the ninth homer given up by Hanson.
However, UTSA could do no further damage as Hanson improved to 25-3 with the win.
Florida Atlantic tagged the Roadrunners for another unearned run to start game two and Melissa Martinez's two-run homer in the sixth pushed the lead to 3-0.
Down to its final three outs, UTSA rallied in the bottom of the seventh.
After Smith reached on a fielder's choice, pinch hitter Madison Kinley ripped a one-out double off the wall in left to put a pair in scoring position. Alyssa Cummings put the Roadrunners on the board with a pinch-hit single up the middle to plate Smith for a 3-1 deficit.
With two outs, Angelica Niño dropped a run-scoring single into center field to pull within one, 3-2, and move the tying run to second base. However, Amanda Wilson got the final out of the game to close down the victory and improve to 14-4.
The teams will close the regular season with a contest at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. UTSA will honor its senior class of Lindsie Knowles, Jade Smith and Tess Soefje following the game as part of Senior Day festivities.
