SAN MARCOS — Stephanie Wangui won the 800 meters and UTSA's 1,600m relay also raced to victory to highlight the Roadrunners' two days of action at this weekend's Bobcat Classic. The meet was the team's final tune-up for the Conference USA Championships.
Wangui crossed the finish line in 2:11.55 to top the field of 16 middle distance runners and it marked her third gold medal in her specialty event during her senior campaign. The 2015 C-USA Champion now has a total of seven wins in her career.
Meanwhile, the mile relay of Jennifer Arinze, Sierra Andres, Paige Patterson and Evelyn Clark passed the baton in a season-best 3:38.18, which was the second-fastest performance in program history. It also moved UTSA back to the top of the league leaderboard and the Roadrunners have finished no worse than third in all seven of their races this spring.
Earlier in the day, Patterson finished fourth as the top collegian in the 400m in a career-best time of 54.20 and that now stands fourth on the school's all-time performers chart. She also now ranks third in the conference standings this season. The junior from Dearborn, Mich., also ran the third leg of UTSA's third-place 400m relay that passed the stick in a season-best time of 46.56.
