Stacy’s walk-off hit lifts UTSA past Marshall on Saturday, 5-4

SAN ANTONIO — Ryan Stacy's bases-loaded single gave UTSA a 5-4, walk-off victory against Marshall on Saturday afternoon.

The Thundering Herd (16-13, 6-5 C-USA) tied the score late in the eighth after a one-out double placed a runner in scoring position. DJ Gee then reached on an infield single, which plated the tying run.

UTSA (12-18, 3-8 C-USA) went scoreless in the eighth and right-hander Andre Shewcraft kept Marshall off the board in the top of the ninth.

Tyler Straub led off the home half of the final frame with a single to left and he moved over a base on Bryan Arias' sacrifice bunt. Marshall intentionally walked Ben Brookover and the bases then became loaded on Trent Bowles third hit of the day. Stacy, who was hitless, hit one deep into left field and scored Straub for the walk-off win.

Shewcraft was awarded the win in his 1.2 innings in relief. The junior allowed just one hit.

Meanwhile, Parker Danciu was charged with the loss in 8.1 innings. He gave up all five UTSA runs.

The offense was hot from the get-go for UTSA after the Roadrunners plated two runs in the first off C.J. Pickering's fourth home run of the season and another run in the second.

Marshall also scored early with a run in the opening frame, but it went scoreless through the next three innings. The Thundering Herd never led the game but tied the game twice, in both the sixth and eighth innings.

Marshall outhit the Roadrunners, 12-9, while UTSA committed a pair of defensive miscues on the day.

Bowles was a perfect 3-for-3 with a double and Straub finished 2-for-4 with a home run, and two runs scored.

Sunday's rubber game will be played at 11 a.m.
