SAN ANTONIO — Mia Hicks set a program record in the discus on Saturday and UTSA won a total of seven events at this weekend's Roadrunners Invitational, which took place the past two days at Park West Athletics Complex.
Hicks registered a measurement of 156-2 (47.61m) en route to second place in the discus and that erased the 13-year-old standard of 155-10 (47.51m) previously held by Edie Christian by just four inches. The freshman from Conroe now ranks fifth on the Conference USA leaderboard. Texas-Rio Grande Valley's Megan Shaw topped the nine-woman field with her toss of 157-5 (47.98m). That performance came on the heels of a runner-up effort on Friday in the shot put (43-9/13.33m).
Meanwhile, Evelyn Clark led a 1-2-3 finish by UTSA sprinters in the 400 meters after crossing the line in 55.21. The senior edged teammate Shantel Swift by a mere one-hundredth of a second and Jennifer Arinze claimed a bronze medal after clocking a time of 55.56. The trio now stands third through fifth, respectively, in the league standings.
The Roadrunners also took the top three spots in the 400m hurdles when Christy Gilbert (1:03.82), Rachael Grossman (1:04.57) and Sierra Andres (1:05.48) crossed the line in succession.
Paige Patterson won the 200m in a wind-aided, personal-best time of 24.43 and that mark now ranks fifth in the circuit through the first month of the season.
UTSA's other gold medal on the track came from its 1,600m relay team of Patterson, Gilbert, Andres and Chelea Taylor. The quartet passed the baton in 3:49.91 and the Roadrunners have finished no worse than third in all five of their mile relay races this spring.
Katelynn Homb opened the meet fot the UTSA with a victory in the hammer on Friday. The senior recorded a career-best throw of 157-4 (47.96m), which now stands fourth on the school's all-time performance chart.
Gabriyella Torres also was victorious after setting a PR of 5-4 ¼ (1.63m) in the high jump and Jemira Thomlinson topped 10-woman javelin field with a toss of 110-0 (33.54m).
"We're working on some new things and finally starting to smooth them out," Torres said. " I am finally starting to get into a rhythm and looking forward to the rest of the season."
The Roadrunners easily won the team title after racking up 221.5 points, while Houston Baptist (140.5) and UTRGV (128.5) rounded out the top three.
UTSA will return to action next Saturday, April 16, at the Texas Invitational in Austin.
