IRVING — Commissioner Judy MacLeod announced the 14 recipients of the Conference USA Winter Spirit of Service Award Thursday, which recognizes the community service efforts of the league's student-athletes. UTSA women's basketball player Niaga Mitchell-Cole was selected as this year's recipient.
Athletes across the conference are recognized upon public service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport.
Mitchell-Cole repeats as the Winter Spirit of Service honoree for UTSA. A local product of San Antonio, the senior forward is a double major in sport, event & tourism management and human resources management.
She has volunteered with numerous organizations across the Alamo City, including One Shirt, One Body; San Antonio Food Bank; San Antonio Children's Hospital; WINGS (Women Inspiring and Nurturing Greatness in Student-Athletes) and Dream Runners. Mitchell-Cole also will participate in For the Kids Dance Marathon and Police Partnership for Sexual Harassment later this month.
Mitchell-Cole appeared in 23 contests this past season and the senior averaged 5.8 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.
