Western Kentucky finishes sweep with 8-5 victory against UTSA on Sunday

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — UTSA made a comeback with a four-run fifth inning to make it a one-run game, but it was unable to overcome the deficit and Western Kentucky finished off a weekend sweep with an 8-5 victory on Sunday afternoon at Nick Denes Field.

The Roadrunners (14-24, 5-13 C-USA) batted around and faced all four WKU pitchers in the big frame in pulling within one at 6-5.

The Hilltoppers (22-18, 9-9 C-USA) went quietly in the bottom half of the fifth, but they stopped the bleeding in the sixth with a pair of runs on a bases-clearing double.

Closer Kevin Elders finished the game for Western Kentucky and picked up the win, his third of the spring.

Chance Kirby was tagged with the loss in 3.2 innings after giving up six runs (four earned) on six hits.

UTSA trailed early in the game after WKU scored two quick runs on a triple and a throwing error.

In the third, the Roadrunners jumped on the board after Skyler Valentine crossed home on Bryan Arias' RBI single. The Hilltoppers answered back in the bottom half with a run and scored another three in the fourth to go in front, 6-1.

Arias was 3-for-5 with an RBI.

UTSA will return to the Bird Bath for a Tuesday night tilt against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
