Roadrunners to visit Western Kentucky this weekend

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will look to continue its winning streak this weekend it visits Western Kentucky for a three-game series that begins at 6 p.m. on Friday. Saturday's second contest is scheduled for 3 p.m. and Sunday's finale is slated for noon.

Five weeks remain in the regular season and the race for the top eight teams is a close one. The Roadrunners (14-21, 5-10 C-USA) are tied for 10th in the league standings with FIU, while three teams are knotted up for seventh with a 6-9 mark.

UTSA heads into the weekend off its first Conference USA series win after taking two tilts from Old Dominion last wekeend.

Karl Craigie pitched a 3-0 shutout on Saturday, while Chance Kirby threw six innings of two-run baseball and was backed up by an offense that contributed 12 hits for a 7-2 victory in Sunday's finale.

Over the weekend, Matt Hilston drew five walks and he now ranks fourth in the nation with 40. He is also four away from the national leader and five away from matching his mark in 2015.

Leading the Roadrunners offense after a successful weekend is Bryan Arias. The San Antonio product is batting at a .308 clip with 37 hits, 19 runs scored, five doubles and a pair of triples.

On the hill, Craigie takes the top spot with a 3.59 ERA. The southpaw is 3-0 on the year in 42.2 innings of work. He has struck out 27 and issued 14 walks.

Western Kentucky (19-18, 6-9 C-USA) heads into the weekend off a pair of midweek games. The Hilltoppers edged Belmont, 3-2, in extra innings on Tuesday night to snap a six-game losing streak, but they dropped a 6-2 decision to Evansville on Wednesday.

WKU were swept by Rice last weekend and it lost two of three to against Louisiana Tech prior to that.

Danny Hudzina leads the Hilltoppers offense and owns the nation's third-best batting average of .437 and he also is second in the NCAA with 66 hits. Hudzina ranks in the top 50 in doubles, doubles per game, on-base percentage, total bases and strikeouts.
