FORT MYERS, Fla. — Led by a top-10 finish from Becky McGeehan, UTSA tied for fourth place at this week's Conference USA Championship, which wrapped up on Wednesday at Verandah Club's Old Orange Course (par 72/6,194 yards).
McGeehan finished in a five-way tie for 10th place at 8-over-par 224 (74-76-74) to lead the Roadrunners to their ninth straight top-four conference finish. UTSA carded rounds of 306, 303 and 289 to equal Western Kentucky with a 907 in the 11-team field.
McGeehan, a sophomore from Gutersloh, Germany, matched her opening-round 74 today on the strength of three birdies, including back-to-back threes on the seventh and eighth holes. It marked her second top-10 showing of the season and kept the Birds' streak of a top-10 league finisher alive in all 11 seasons.
Julie Houston was three shots behind McGeehan with a 227 to tie for 16th. The freshman from Allen bounced back from an opening-round 79 with a 1-under 71 on Tuesday and then closed with a 77 en route to her sixth top-20 finish of the season behind a team-best nine birdies.
Brogan Townend and Nikki Long were one stroke behind Houston in a tie for 19th at 228.
After opening with a pair of 78s, Townend posted UTSA's low round of the day with her even-par 72 that featured five birdies, including a two on the 122-yard 17th. The senior from Blackburn, England, concluded her collegiate career with her fourth top-20 effort of the season and 14th with the Roadrunners.
Long turned in the sixth top 20 of her sophomore campaign after closing with her second 75 of the event, which was highlighted by five of her team-high nine birdies, after posting a 78 on Tuesday.
Aimee Ponte rounded out the UTSA lineup in 45th with a 241 (82-82-77).
Middle Tennessee captured the team title with an 876. Old Dominion was second with an 889 and Southern Miss took third (896).
FIU (912), Marshall (928), UTEP (928), UAB (935), Florida Atlantic (944) and North Texas (949) rounded out the field.
Meghan MacLaren of FIU successfully defended her individual crown with a 3-under 213 (73-71-69).
