NORFOLK, Va. — Old Dominion took advantage of a pair of costly UTSA errors and scored late in the game to defeat the Roadrunners by a score of 5-2 on Friday night at the Bud Betheny Baseball Complex.
The two UTSA miscues came in the fifth inning and that helped the Monarchs (24-10, 7-6 C-USA) score twice and break a 1-1 tie.
Old Dominion's bullpen held UTSA (12-21, 3-10 C-USA) off the board until it scored a run in the eighth, which cut the deficit in half at 4-2.
Ryan Stacy led off the frame with his first triple of the season, and third extra base hit of the year, and he scored on Skyler Valentine's RBI ground out.
The Monarchs tacked on another run in the home half of the eighth to cap the scoring.
Zach Rutherford, Connor Myers and Nick Lustrino accounted for six of ODU's nine hits.
Aaron Burns was charged with the loss. Burns gave up five runs, three of which were unearned, in seven innings of work.
Sam Sinnen earned the win in 3.2 innings in relief. Sinnen surrendered one hit and struck out four, while Morgan Maguire picked up his second save after tossing the final 1.2 innings.
The series will continue with a 3 p.m. (CT) contest on Saturday.
