SAN ANTONIO — Eric Buchalter won in singles and doubles, but it was not enough in a 5-2 setback to Abilene Christian on Thursday afternoon at the UTSA Tennis Center.
Buchalter paired with Takeru Watanabe for a 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles, but the Wildcats (16-6) scored victories on the other two courts, including a narrow 6-4 triumph by Henry Adams and Nico Agritelley against Fabian Brand and Diogo Casa at the top spot to secure a 1-0 lead.
In singles, Agritelley handed the visitors a 2-0 advantage with a 6-2, 6-4 decision against Joao Riquelme at No. 3.
Abilene Christian's lead grew to 3-0 when Paul Domanski downed Brand, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 6.
Buchalter, a native of Birmingham, Ala., put the Roadrunners (3-16) on the board when he swept Jason Proctor, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 2, but the Wildcats clinched the match with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory by Hunter Holman against Christian Carrillo at the court spot.
The match was played out and Josh Sheehy outlasted Casa on center court with a 7-6, (5), 7-6 (6) decision.
Watanabe edged Adams in the final contest, rallying for a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 win at No. 5 to provide the final 5-2 margin.
The Roadrunners will travel to Austin on Saturday for a 3 p.m. doubleheader at No. 21 Texas.
