Stephen F. Austin, Ohio top UTSA on Saturday

LUBBOCK — Randee Crawford hit two homers and drove in five runs, but UTSA dropped a 4-3 decision to Stephen F. Austin before an 8-5 setback to Ohio on Saturday at the Texas Tech Invitational.

Bailee Baldwin combined to hit .429 (3-of-7) with a double, while Erica Sanchez had a pair of hits, including a homer, to go along with a career-high three RBIs for the Roadrunners (6-14).

In the opener, the Ladyjacks (8-12) got a run in the top of the sixth to break a 3-3 tie and hold off UTSA for the 4-3 victory.

Stephen F. Austin picked up a run in each of the first three innings for a 3-0 lead before the Roadrunners knotted the score with a three-run bottom of the fifth. Jade Smith started the rally with an infield single and Kendall Burton lined a hit to right field to put runners on first and second for Crawford, who crushed a three-run shot the opposite way to pull even.

However, the Ladyjacks broke the tie in the top of the sixth with the help of a throwing error and UTSA could only get one hit in the final two innings as Stephen F. Austin took the 4-3 victory.

In the nightcap, the Bobcats (8-6) scored runs in each of the first five innings to build a lead that they would not relinquish in an 8-5 win.

Ohio scored a run in the first, two in the second, one in the third and another in the fourth to build a 5-0 cushion before the Roadrunners broke through in the fifth on Crawford’s second homer of the day. Burton reached after getting hit by a pitch, stole second and then trotted home when Crawford’s blast cleared the fence in left to pull within 5-2.

But the Bobcats struck back with three runs in the bottom of the frame for an 8-2 lead before the Roadrunners chipped away at the deficit.

Sanchez got two runs back in the sixth with the second homer of her career. The shot made it 8-4 and UTSA had an opportunity for more in the frame, but left two runners stranded.

In the seventh, Sanchez pushed another run across with an infield single with two outs and the bases loaded. That brought the go-ahead run to the plate, but the Bobcats got a strikeout to end the threat and hold on for the win.

UTSA will wrap up play against tournament host Texas Tech (9-11) at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
