BEAUMONT — No. 71 Lamar downed UTSA, 7-0, on Tuesday afternoon at the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
The Cardinals (10-5) scored just their second-ever win in 24 all-time meetings with the Roadrunners (3-15) by grabbing the doubles point and sweeping all six singles contests.
In doubles, Jeandre Hoogenboezem and Nikita Lis teamed up to defeat the UTSA tandem of Eric Buchalter and Takeru Watanabe by a 6-4 count at No. 2. Juuso Laitinen and Sebastian Santibanez then clinched the 1-0 lead with a 6-3 win against Christian Carrillo and Joao Riquelme at No. 3.
UTSA’s top duo of Fabian Brand and Diogo Casa held a 5-4 advantage over the No. 43-ranked pair of Michael Feucht and Benny Schweizer when doubles play was stopped.
Lamar won all six singles matchups in straight sets, including a 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 victory by Hoogenboezem against Watanabe at No. 5 that secured the match for the Cardinals.
The Roadrunners will return home to host Abilene Christian (15-6) at 2 p.m. on Thursday.
