Wangui leads Roadrunners at this weekend's Ricardo Romo Invitational

SAN ANTONIO — Stephanie Wangui finished as the top collegian in the 800 meters and UTSA recorded a total of five podium finishes at this weekend's inaugural Ricardo Romo Invitational, which was contested the past three days at Park West Athletics Complex.

Wangui clocked a season-best 2:09.07 in the third heat on Saturday afternoon, which was good for fourth place in the field of 18 middle distance runners, and that vaulted her to the top of the Conference USA leaderboard. The time also ranks 21st nationally through two meets this season.

Meanwhile, Gabriyella Torres picked up a silver medal in the two-day heptathlon, which was contested on Thursday and Friday. The freshman from Port Isabel scored 4,280 points en route to second place in the multi-event competition and that score currently leads the league leaderboard.

The Roadrunners also received a trio of third-place performances.

Tameyah Carroll broke the sand in 18-5 (5.61m) in the long jump, Elesha Alyn skipped to a wind-aided measurement of 39-9 ¾ (12.13m) in the triple jump, a mark that now ranks fourth in the circuit, and the 1,600m relay quartet of Shantel Swift, Evelyn Clark, Jennifer Arinze and Paige Patterson passed the baton in a conference-leading 3:42.39 in the final event at the three-day meet.

No. 5 Texas A&M won the team title with 222 points, while 19th-ranked Baylor (165) and Akron (100.5) rounded out the top three. The Roadrunners accumulated 91 points en route to fourth place.

UTSA will be back in action at next weekend's Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. The four-day meet is scheduled to get underway on Wednesday, March 30.
