HATTIESBURG, Miss. — UTSA won its second consecutive match with a 4-2, neutral site victory against former Southland Conference foe Nicholls on Saturday.
The Roadrunners (9-9) jumped out to the early lead by winning doubles matches on the first and third courts.
Jacobea Junger and Miriam Rosell Canudas won their seventh consecutive contest at the top spot in the lineup with their 6-2 triumph against Julia Melendez and Milou Pietersz. The Colonels (6-13) drew even when Isla Brock and Laia Charles downed Lina Hallgren and Charlene Tiwari at the No. 2 position, 6-4, but Sonia Madroñal Medina and Alena Shichkova rallied past Clemence Krug and Ambika Pande at the third spot, 7-5, to clinch the point.
Nicole Karaklis extended the lead to 2-0 after coming off court six with a 6-2, 6-3 singles win against Andrea Mastrippolito and Junger followed with her team-leading 10th victory of the spring to push the advantage to three. The senior from Stuttgart, Germany, got past Brock in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
Nicholls drew within one following wins at the Nos. 2 and 5 spots in the lineup, but Tiwari held off Charles at the fourth position, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), to seal the victory.
UTSA's weekend road trip will continue on Sunday when it faces Southern Miss (14-2). First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m.
