UTSA falls at Southern Miss on Friday night, 11-2

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Southern Miss scored at least one run in four of the final five innings to defeat UTSA, 11-2, on Friday night at Pete Taylor Park.

The Roadrunners (10-12, 1-4 C-USA) left eight runners on and struggled to push across runs. The Golden Eagles (18-6, 4-1 C-USA) registered 14 hits to the Roadrunners six.

Southern Miss starting pitcher Cord Cockrell kept UTSA scoreless through his five innings of action to receive the win. Jake Winston pitched 3.1 innings and gave up one unearned run on two hits to pick up his first save.

Meanwhile, right-hander Aaron Burns was charged with the loss in his five innings of action. Burns allowed six runs on 10 hits.

The Roadrunners didn’t jump on the board until the sixth inning but trailed 4-1 at that point.

In the seventh inning, the Roadrunners tacked on another run but the home team added two runs to lead 6-2.

In the following inning, Taylor Brayley crushed a grand slam over to left field for the Golden Eagles’ final five runs of the game.

The series finale will be played at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
