SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will play its second Conference USA series of the season this weekend when it travels to Southern Miss for a three-game series. Both Thursday and Friday’s contests are scheduled for 6 p.m. with the finale slated for 11 a.m. on Saturday.
The Roadrunners (10-10, 1-2 C-USA) are in the midst of a five-game road swing and they dropped its first midweek contest of the season on Tuesday night at Texas by a score of 11-2. Both teams traded runs through the first four innings before the Longhorns put up eight runs in the sixth. A home run by Tres Barrera capped off the scoring in the eighth.
Skyler Valentine, the UTSA's top hitter with a .338 batting average, had one hit on the night to extend his hitting streak to eight games. Valentine remains the team leader in hits (27), runs scored (17), home runs (2), RBIs (17), total bases (41) and slugging percentage (.513).
Meanwhile, Mason George is batting .313 on the season with 21 hits, 16 runs, a team-leading eight doubles, one triple, 11 RBIs and 13 walks to go along with a .434 on base percentage.
UTSA will see its usual starters for Thursday and Friday with right-handed pitchers Chance Kirby and Aaron Burns, respectively, with Saturday’s yet to be determined.
Southern Miss (16-6, 2-1 C-USA) is coming off a 12-7 loss to Tulane on Tuesday after taking two of three games from Marshall last weekend. The Golden Eagles are 10-2 at home this spring andt heir only two losses came against Southeastern Lousiana and Samford.
As a team, Southern Miss is batting at a .309 clip while opponents are hitting .241. The Golden Eagles pitching staff has compiled a 3.88 ERA.
Southern Miss has six players with at least a .300 average and is led by Jake Sandlin, who is at .386. Sandlin leads the team with 32 hits, including four doubles, one triple and a home run, to go along with 18 runs, 14 RBIs and 11 walks.
