Shelvin named Conference USA Co-Track Athlete of the Week on Tuesday

IRVING — Jurmarcus Shelvin was named Conference USA Co-Track Athlete of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday. He shared the award with Middle Tennessee's Sampson Laari.

Shelvin sped to a meet-record time of 51.36 in winning the 400-meter hurdles last Saturday at the season-opening UTSA Invitational and it marked his first career victory in his specialty event. The senior from Pasadena currently owns the top time in C-USA and ranks fourth nationally through the opening weekend of the outdoor campaign.

"Having the support of my family, teammates and coaches really helped drive me to what I accomplished today," Shelvin said after Saturday's victory. "Breaking a meet record, originally set by my best friend Keyunta Hayes, makes it very special. The foundation Coach (Adam) Hudson and all the former great hurdlers have set has made my job easier. I am looking forward to continuing to run well the rest of the season."

UTSA will return to action this week when it hosts the inaugural Ricardo Romo Invitational at Park West Athletics Complex. The three-day meet is scheduled to get underway on Thursday.
