Texas A&M-Corpus Christi shuts out Roadrunners on Tuesday, 2-0

CORPUS CHRISTI — Liz Carter allowed just two hits and she struck out seven over seven scoreless innings to lead Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to a 2-0 win over visiting UTSA on Tuesday afternoon at Chapman Field.

Kendall Burton and Angelica Niño picked up hits for the Roadrunners, who fell to 6-10 on the season. In the circle, Chelsea Parker got the start and yielded two runs in three-plus innings, while Lizzy Fox tossed three scoreless frames in relief.

Meanwhile, Carter also went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored a run for the Islanders (8-8), who snapped a five-game losing streak. Aspen Auger and Mackinzee Griebel each drove in runs to lead the offense.

The teams combined for just a pair of base runners in the first two innings and UTSA had its first scoring chance in the top of the third.

Niño started the frame with an infield single but a pair of grounders resulted in outs. Bailee Baldwin reached after being hit by a pitch that moved Burton to scoring position, but Carter got the final out to end the threat.

The Islanders broke through for the only runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth with three hits and an error. Auger’s RBI single and Griebel’s run-scoring grounder chased Parker from the contest and gave the home squad the 2-0 lead.

UTSA had its best opportunity to get on the board in the sixth when Burton singled to start the inning. A grounder and a passed ball pushed the sophomore to third base, but the Roadrunners were unable drive home the run yet again.

Carter retired the Roadrunners in order in the seventh to close out the 2-0 Islanders victory and improve to 5-5 in the circle.

UTSA will be back in action at 10 a.m. on Friday when it will open play in the Texas Tech Invitational against Stephen F. Austin (5-11).
