SAN ANTONIO — UTEP handed UTSA a 4-1 setback on Saturday at the UTSA Tennis Center.
The Miners (9-8) claimed the doubles points with victories at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions in the lineup.
Raven Bennett and Bethan Hayward defeated Lina Hallgren and Charlene Tiwari by a score of 6-3 at the third spot, while Matilda Tench and Lois Wagenvoort downed Sonia Madroñal Medina and Alena Shichkova at the third slot, 6-4.
Miriam Rosell Canudas drew the Roadrunners (7-9) even to start singles play when she cruised past Vivienne Kulicke, the nation's 119th-ranked player, in straight sets (6-0, 6-1) on center court. It was her team-leading ninth win of the spring.
However, UTEP won the next three contests to clinch the victory.
Daphne Visscher got past Charlene Tiwari in two sets (6-4, 6-0) on court four, Duda Santos dealt Alena Shichkova a 7-5, 6-4 setback at the third position and Wagenvoort defeated Jacobea Junger by a count of 6-3, 7-5.
UTSA will continue its home stand next Wednesday, March 23, against Lamar (6-5). First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
