Long leads UTSA to sixth at MountainView Collegiate

TUCSON, Ariz. — Nikki Long posted her fifth top-20 finish of the season to lead the UTSA women’s golf team to sixth place at the this weekend's MountainView Collegiate, which concluded on Saturday at MountainView Golf Club.

Long finished in a four-way tie for 13th place in the 85-player field after carding a 2-over-par 218. The sophomore from San Antonio Johnson High School opened the 54-hole event with a pair of 71s on Friday and wrapped up with a 76 on Saturday, finishing just one shot out of the top 10.

Lara Weinstein turned in the best round of the day for UTSA with an even-par 72 that featured a pair of birdies on the back nine. The junior from South Africa finished 21st with a season-best 220 after posting a 73 and a 75 on Friday.

Aimee Ponte was one shot behind Weinstein in a tie for 22nd with a 221 (72-74-75), while Julie Houston and Becky McGeehan rounded out the UTSA lineup in 34th (75-75-74—224) and 42nd (71-79-75—225), respectively. Brogan Townend tied for 45th (72-76-78—226) while competing as an individual.

The Roadrunners placed sixth in the 15-team field that included six nationally ranked squads. UTSA carded a 14-over 878 (287-295-296) and ended up just one shot behind New Mexico State (877) and three back of No. 22 Missouri (875). The Birds were two strokes better than No. 42 Ohio State (880).

No. 7 Georgia captured the team title with a 5-under 859 on the strength of individual medalist Jillian Hollis’ 11-under 205 (66-67-72). No. 16 Iowa State was second with an 866 and 43rd-ranked Purdue was third (974). San Jose State (887), Colorado State (888) and Texas State (889) rounded out the top 10.

The Roadrunners will return to action on April 1-2 at the Dallas Athletic Club/SMU Invitational.
