SAN ANTONIO — After UTSA scored in the first inning, Gonzaga held off the Roadrunners the rest of the way and defeated the home team, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.
UTSA’s (8-5) lone run came early in the game after leadoff man Matt Hilston drew his 17th walk of the season and eventually scored on C.J. Pickering’s RBI single.
Gonzaga (7-6) evened the score in the following inning on a two-out double and took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth that would hold the rest of the way.
Bulldogs starter Brandon Bailey gave up half of the Roadrunners hits, earning his third win of the season. After giving up a hit to lead off the second inning, Bailey retired nine straight UTSA batters. The right-hander worked six innings and scattered three hits and allowed one run with five strikeouts.
Meanwhile, Chance Kirby received his first decision of the season and took the loss in 4.1 innings of action. Kirby gave up three runs on seven hits and fanned four.
All but four in UTSA’s lineup registered a hit with Gonzaga outhitting the Roadrunners, 11-6.
Jeffrey Bohling went a perfect 3-for-3 with one run, a double and a stolen base for the Bulldogs.
The series will conclude with a 10:30 a.m. doubleheader on Sunday.
