EDINBURG — UTSA finished off a perfect weekend with a 5-2 victory at Texas-Rio Grande Valley on Sunday.
The Roadrunners, who evened their season record at 6-6 with the triumph, jumped on top early by winning the doubles point.
Jacobea Junger and Miriam Rosell Canudas won their team-leading ninth contest of the spring with a 6-1 victory on center court against Dominique Esparza and Reegan Greenwood. It was the duo's fourth consecutive win.
The Vaqueros (2-4) evened things up when Tara Donaho and Dominique Ibarra came off court three with a 6-2 triumph against Lina Hallgren and Charlene Tiwari.
The deciding match came down to a tiebreaker and the tandem of Nicole Karaklis and Alena Shichkova won just their second contest of the year after outlasting Doris Aleksovska and Natacha Minc, 7-6 (7-3).
UTSA's advantage grew to 3-0 when Tiwari defeated Minc in straight sets (6-3, 6-0) at the fourth singles position and Rosell Canudas followed with a 6-3, 6-0 victory against Greenwood at the top spot in the lineup.
UT-Rio Grande Valley got on the board with Donaho's 6-2, 6-4 triumph against Sonia Madroñal Medina on the sixth court, but Junger clinched the victory after holding off Esparza in straight sets (7-5, 7-5).
Karaklis picked up the Birds' other victory of the day with her 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 win against Aleksovska at the fifth position.
UTSA will return to action on Wednesday, March 2, at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (7-0). First serve in the second meeting of the season between the teams is scheduled for 2 p.m. The Islanders blanked the Roadrunners earlier this spring in the Alamo City back on Feb. 10.
