Burton sets school mark as UTSA downs Stephen F. Austin in Ole Miss Classic finale

OXFORD, Miss. — UTSA posted a season-high 17 hits and used a pair of big innings to run-rule Stephen F. Austin, 10-2, on Sunday morning in the final game of the Ole Miss Classic.

Kendall Burton tied a career-high with three hits, including a triple to set the school’s career record with her ninth in just 68 games. Angelica Niño also set a new career best with three hits, while Chelsea Thomas, Tess Soefje and Erica Sanchez each recorded a pair of hits.

In the circle, Lizzy Fox tossed five scoreless innings of relief to pick up her second win of the season.

The Roadrunners (6-9) wasted little time in jumping ahead and the Ladyjacks (4-11) could never recover.

Burton led off the contest with her record-setting triple and she came around to score on Bailee Baldwin’s sacrifice fly to left. Thomas then lined a single to right and the sophomore was able to trot home on Soefje’s third homer of the season. The shot pushed the UTSA lead to 3-0 just four batters into the game.

After hits by Alyssa Cummings, Taylor Oberg and Sanchez, Niño plated two more with an infield hit to extend the lead to 5-0.

Stephen F. Austin got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the frame to close the gap to 5-2, but it would get no closer as UTSA used a four-run third inning to put the game away.

Jade Smith’s RBI grounder made it 6-2 and RBI hits from Burton and Thomas made the lead 9-2. In the top of the sixth, Sanchez provided the final run for the eight-run cushion with a hit that plated pinch runner Hailey Garza.

The run support was more than enough for Fox, who entered in the second inning and scattered six hits for the victory.

The Roadrunners will be back in action on Tuesday, March 1 when they travel to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (7-8) for a 3 p.m. matchup with the Islanders.
